Mariska Hargitay’s son recently honored late grandmother Jayne Mansfield with a tribute that was close to his heart — literally.
The actor’s oldest child, August, 18, whom she shares with husband Peter Hermann, recently honored Mansfield with a stylish tribute at Carnegie Hall, where he attended the premiere for his mom’s documentary about Mansfield on June 13.
August, along with his parents and two siblings, posed on the red carpet at the New York City premiere for “My Mom Jayne,” the documentary Hargitay directed about Mansfield’s life and career. He sported a black suit with a noticeable pink inscription of Mansfield’s signature, “Jayne,” along with a pink heart, over the lapel on the left side.
“I wanted to bring sort of an old Hollywood glamour to it, and as an homage to her,” Hargitay tells TODAY.com. “My son was so sweet because I wanted to put a heart or maybe a — you know, we talked about possibly putting a ‘J’ on his lapel, and then all of a sudden I went (gasps), ‘Her signature was so beautiful,’ and it’s part of the film.”
The documentary chronicles Hargitay’s quest to better understand her mother, who died in a car accident when Hargitay was 3 years old, through interviews with her siblings and other family members.
She also looked close to home when it came time to craft her mother’s signature on her son’s suit.
“I have the most amazing team that helps me get ready,” Hargitay explains. “The stylist and my amazing tailor. I handed him her signature and he put it on his lapel, and I was so blown away.”
She says when she saw it, she “just started weeping.”
“My son was so proud to wear it,” she says. “It was really extraordinary.”
August has attended quite a few events recently with his mother, including the June 23 premiere for her documentary in Los Angeles and a New York Knicks game in May.
His special “Jayne” lapel was also on display in a June 24 Instagram post from Hargitay’s longtime friend and “Law & Order” co-star Chris Meloni.
“Busy summer so far with celebration, friends, tv mom, ppl I love making films,” Meloni wrote in the caption of his post, which also featured a selfie showing August in his suit, August’s sister, Amaya, and Meloni’s wife and daughter.
