Abbey Romeo and David Isaacman dream of getting married one day, but the โLove on the Spectrumโ stars arenโt in a rush to tie the knot.
โWe already feel like weโre married from the inside,โ Abbey, 26, tells TODAY.com.
โWe are not ready to do the real thing yet,โ David, 30, adds.
For now, the couple is simply enjoying each otherโs company and preparing to celebrate their fourth dating anniversary this summer.
โNot only do I like her personality, but sheโs as sweet as all my favorite desserts, and sheโs pretty and funny and smart and beautiful and lovely at the same time,โ David says of his girlfriend.
Itโs an exciting time for the lovebirds, who first met while appearing on โLove on the Spectrum,โ a Netflix series that follows the dating lives of people on the autism spectrum.
When the show returns for its third season on April 2, viewers will see more of Abbey and Davidโs blossoming romance and catch up with other series regulars, including Dani Bowman, Adรกn Correa, Connor Tomlinson, Tanner Smith and James Jones. Theyโll also get to know two new faces this season: Madison Marilla and Pari Kim.
Since theyโre fan favorites of the show, Abbey and David often get recognized in public. โI have fans wherever I go,โ Abbey notes.
Itโs a far cry from how Abbey used to feel in her childhood. โI used to feel isolated and alone as a kid, and I had a lot less language. Autism affected me more when I was a kid. It can affect me still, even as an adult woman. It affects me a little bit, but not a lot,โ she says.
If youโve followed Abbey and Davidโs journey, you know their love seemed destined from their very first date, when they visited a wildlife learning center in their home state of California. They soon realized they share a love of lions, and a relationship blossomed from there.
When asked why they both admire the king of the jungle so much, the couple is on the same page. Abbey declares, โTheyโre brave, and I like being brave.โ
โMe too,โ David agrees.
Both Abbey and David tapped into their bravery when they signed up for โLove on the Spectrum,โ although they admit to being nervous when they first started filming the show. In the end, the couple says the experience has changed their lives for the better.
โAs an adult woman, I feel accepted for who I am now these days. Before, I felt lonely and left out,โ Abbey explains.
The Centers for Disease Control define autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as a โdevelopmental disability caused by differences in the brain.โ As โLove on the Spectrumโ shows, each person experiences autism in a different way, with subtle differences in their ability to communicate, interact and learn.
While growing up, Abbey encountered challenges with communication.
โThe type of autism I have is called autism communication disorder,โ she explains. โ(It took) 22 years of speech therapy, 15 years of occupational therapy to get where I am today to be able to talk just like this.โย ย
Meanwhile, David has synesthesia, which the Cleveland Clinic defines as a โphenomenon that causes sensory crossovers, such as tasting colors or feeling sounds.โ
โSheโs learning my synesthesia by seeing numbers as colors,โ David explains as he demonstrates how he associates each number with a color.
Abbey says David also supports her, especially when she encounters unwelcome noises.ย
โWhen I hear a certain noise, like a baby crying, it really hurts my ears. I have auditory issues,โ she says then asks David what he tells her whenever a baby cries near her.
โJust ignore it and keep a distance. You need to remember you must use the noise canceling headsets,โ David replies.
โOr you can cover my ears because I donโt want to hear it,โ Abbey adds.ย
After nearly four years of dating, Abbey and David have developed some simple yet solid tips for keeping a romance alive.
โThe secret to a good relationship is that we understand each other (and) the way our minds work. Weโre kind and patient with each other and weโre our true selves,โ Abbey says.ย
David agrees and adds his own advice, saying, โThe secret to a great relationship is have confidence, gather your courage and be yourself and care for others too.โย
The couple has become friends with several other previous stars of โLove on the Spectrum,โ including Subodh Garg and Devin Morrissey, and they have some pretty wise advice for anyone else with autism whoโs looking for love.
โGive someone a gift to remember them by,โ David suggests. โThey must feel confident. Gather their courage and be themselves by caring for others.โย
In the end, Abbey says, it all boils down to connecting with the person youโre meeting for the first time.
โYou have to date someone who you have things in common with, same interests or similar interests,โ she says.ย
Abbey and David have plenty in common, like their love for lions and pizza, and they enjoy going on lunch dates together.
โShe makes me feel much better when weโre together,โ David says.ย
In the new season of โLove on the Spectrum,โ Abbey sings a beautiful song she wrote for David. When asked what inspired her to share her feelings in a song, Abbey says, โItโs because Iโve always wanted a boyfriend and now Iโve got one.โ
While reflecting on the romantic moment, David says it was a special moment.ย
โIt was very special, what I did for him. And heโs special with me,โ Abbey says.
If โLove on the Spectrumโ gets renewed for Season 4, the lovebirds would be excited to return for another batch of episodes.
โI just donโt know when thatโs going to be,โ Abbey says.ย
