In 2024, it was “brat summer.” Could 2025 become “Lorde summer”?
Fans are theorizing it’s possible after Lorde unexpectedly posted a snippet of what appears to be a new song on TikTok on April 9.
The New Zealand singer posted a 15-second video with an original audio that sounds very Lorde-esque.
“Since I was 17, I gave you everything/ Now we wake from a dream, well, baby, what was that?” Lorde sings over a synth pop beat.
In the video, the singer appears to be walking through Washington Square Park in New York City as she sings some of the lyrics.
The reaction from fans was immediate — the TikTok has racked up more than 7.9 million views and 1.4 million likes in less than 24 hours after it was posted, and the comments show her fans going into a frenzy.
“LORDE SUMMER IS UPON US,” the official Spotify account wrote in a comment.
“RECESSION IS OVER LORDE IS BACK ?!?” a TikToker commented.
“Brat summer walked so lorde summer could run,” another TikToker said.
“CANT BELIEVE I SURVIVED THE LORDE DROUGHT,” another commenter wrote.
The release of the video coincided with Lorde wiping her website and Instagram page clean. On the latter, she shared a comment from a social media user that read, “WAIT WHAT?????”
Lorde, the 28-year-old born Ella Yelich-O’Connor, hasn’t released a studio album since 2021, when she dropped “Solar Power,” her third record. It was a departure from her dark, electropop records like “Melodrama” and “Pure Heroine.”
The singer has been featured on tracks since, including the remix of Charli XCX’s “Girl, so confusing” last year.
Lorde has been spotted in New York City with Dev Hynes, the man behind Blood Orange, in recent months as she reportedly was working on new music. And back in August, Jim-E Stack, a producer who has worked with Gracie Abrams and Bon Iver, posted a photo of Lorde holding a laptop as she appeared to sit in a studio.
The news of a potential new Lorde song didn’t stop on TikTok. Fans on X also couldn’t stop gushing over the possibility of new music from the New Zealand singer.
“How it feels walking in the sun with lorde blasting through my headphones knowing that new music is finally on the way and another lorde summer is imminent,” one X user posted along with a GIF of dolphins jumping out of water in front of a rainbow.
“Lorde coming through just when I need her…. Let’s talk about REAL artists… wow,” another X user said.
“LORDE IS COMING BACK CLAIM YOUR MEDAL,” an X user posted alongside a graphic of a medal that reads, “I survived the Lorde drought August 2023 — April 2025.”
Others reminisced on their lives when Lorde was releasing music, and what it could mean to have new songs from the musician.
“Lorde releasing music and there’s a new hunger games movie coming out it’s fully 2013 again,” an X user said.
“The way lorde always releases music right when i’m about to have a major life change,” one fan wrote on X.
“Me checking Lorde’s website every 30 seconds,” one X user captioned a photo of the singer waving while holding a laptop, encapsulating the anticipation many fans have for her new work.
