Katy Perry immediately switched into protective mode when a fan collapsed during the singer’s “Lifetimes Tour.”
Perry, who is currently on a worldwide tour, recently stopped in Detroit for a show at Little Caesars Arena on Aug. 3. During each concert, the pop star invites a group of fans to the stage to perform a song together. That night it was “The One That Got Away” from her hit 2010 album, “Teenage Dream.” But the latest fan interaction took an unexpected turn when one appeared to become overwhelmed with emotion.
In a clip from the concert shared by local Michigan media company MLive on YouTube, two fans are seen joining Perry on stage and embracing her before revealing their names: Paige and McKenna. Paige wears a white crop top and sparkly blue mini skirt while McKenna sports a black t-shirt, blue tutu and black leather leggings.
“You’re sparkling so bright. Your light is so bright. I saw you and that’s why I wanted you on this stage so you can share your light with everyone” Perry tells a shy McKenna as she nods along.
“Isn’t this awesome?” Perry asks Paige. “Did you ever think in a million years you would be on stage?”
Paige says she is still in disbelief and McKenna agrees. “I wanted to meet you so bad,” she sweetly tells Perry.
Katy comforts her, saying that her dream has come true. She then grabs Paige and McKenna’s hands and walks them to the other side of the stage where two more fans are waiting.
She informs the fans, and the audience, that she is going to play “a really special song.”
While the crowd and onstage fans begin to cheer, Perry says they are going to act as her band for the song and she goes to get shakers to hand to each of them.
As she goes down the line, Perry seems to notice that McKenna looks unwell and advises her to “breathe” before the fan suddenly faints.
Perry and Paige kneel beside McKenna as she lies on her back. The singer is shown helping the fan sit up. The entire arena then begins to chant “McKenna” to show support.
The 40-year-old singer continued to wait by McKenna’s side while medical assistance rushed to the stage videos on social media confirmed.
TODAY.com reached out to Perry’s rep for a comment.
After McKenna was taken away, Perry gathered the other three fans and started to pray, Billboard reported. She said, “Dear God, we pray for McKenna, that she will come back fully and brighter and better than ever. Amen.”
Perry also explained to the crowd, “It’s so much. Sometimes you’re so brave and you can get on stage, and it’s overwhelming. I understand that feeling.”
According to the music publication, Perry later shared an update on the young fan. “McKenna’s doing great, by the way,” she said while riding in a giant butterfly above the stands.
Fans applauded Perry’s caring response on social media and sent well wishes to McKenna. One uploaded a clip to TikTok of the singer performing “The One That Got Away” with the three fans and wrote, “@Katy Perry you handled the situation like a pro.”
Others agreed in the comments. One wrote, “I thought it was so nice of Katy to pray for her afterwards.”
Another said, “I was there…I felt so bad for her! I’m hoping she’s okay and got to see the rest of the show.”
