Jason Momoa Shares Details About His Dad’s Cameo in ‘Chief of War’


Jason Momoa’s newest project features an appearance from a special guest.

In a segment that aired on TODAY July 31, the “Aquaman” star told NBC News correspondent Liz Kreutz that his dad, Joseph Momoa, makes a cameo in his television series “Chief of War” which premieres on Apple TV+ on Aug. 1.

Momoa stars in the historical drama, which tells the story of the Hawaiian Islands’ unification and fight against colonialism in the late 18th century. The series, which he co-created and executive produced, holds personal meaning for Momoa, as he was born in Hawaii and his father is Native Hawaiian.

The actor told TODAY that his dad can be spotted in the project.

“Pops is in it, yeah,” Momoa says. “He’s blowing the conch shell.”

Momoa added that not only did his dad hold the responsibility of blowing the conch shell in “Chief of War,” but also fulfilled the duty when he was growing up.

“Any special gathering whatsoever, my dad was always doing that,” Momoa says.

The actor shared how special it was to see his dad being involved in the filming process.

“To see him all in the in wardrobe was a pretty beautiful moment,” he said.

For Momoa, “Chief of War” is a deeply personal passion project that took years to create. Not only does the show feature his father, but it also debuts on his 46th birthday.

“It’s really a once in a lifetime opportunity,” he says. “It’s the biggest thing that’s ever happened to me.”

In the show, Momoa plays Ka’iana, a chief of war based on a real historical figure who was one of the first Hawaiians to travel abroad. He said that attention to detail and historical accuracy was important to him as the project came to life.

“This is everything I’ve ever wanted to do, to do something for my culture and my heritage,” Momoa adds. “To be honest, guys, I’ve never seen anything quite like this show.”
