Jane Pitt, Brad Pitt’s Mom, Has Died at 84

Jane Pitt, the mother of the Academy Award-winning actor Brad Pitt, has died. She was 84.

No official cause of death has been released. TODAY.com has reached out to Brad Pitt’s representatives for comment, but has not heard back.

Jane Pitt, a longtime resident of Springfield, Missouri, was married to Brad Pitt’s father, William Pitt. In addition to being the mother to the “Fight Club” actor, Jane Pitt was a mother to son Doug Pitt, a Missouri businessman and philanthropist, and daughter Julie Neal. She also had 14 grandchildren.

While remembering Jane Pitt on TODAY Aug. 7, Savannah Guthrie and Willie Geist resurfaced a sweet moment when Brad Pitt gave a shoutout to his mother during a special screening of his 2025 film “F1” in June.

In the clip, Brad Pitt turned to Savannah and said, “I got to say hi to my mom, because she watches you every morning.”

“To Jane Pitt. Love you, Mom,” he then said to the camera before blowing a kiss.

Nearly two months later, while revisiting the moment, Savannah said, “That made us feel so good when he said that and he just adored his mom, so we’re sending our love to the whole family.”

Brad Pitt’s niece, Sydney, shared a post about Jane Pitt’s death on Instagram on Aug. 6 with a carousel of 20 photos.

“My sweet Grammy, Jane Etta, we were not ready for you to go yet but knowing you are finally free to sing, dance, and paint again makes it a tad easier. If you knew Grammy, you knew she had the biggest heart. She cared deeply for everyone and everything, no questions asked,” she captioned the post, in part.

“There was no limit to the love she gave, and everyone who met her felt it. I don’t know how we move forward without her. But I know she’s still here in every brushstroke, every kind gesture, every hummingbird. She was love in its purest form,” she continued.

Known to the public through her famous son, Jane Pitt largely maintained a private life. However, she did periodically make public appearances, including red carpet premieres with Brad Pitt.

She also visited to “The Late Show with David Letterman” prior to Mother’s Day in 2012, when she was one of the celebrity mothers who read an item on the “Top 10 Pieces of Advice I Have Given My Child” list.

“Don’t believe all the hype you read about yourself, honey. Actually, you’re a short, overweight bald guy,” she teased.
