Actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found dead in their Santa Fe, New Mexico, home on Feb. 26, authorities said.
The Santa Fe County Sheriffโs Officeย said deputies were dispatched to a home on Old Sunset Trail in Hyde Park, where Hackman, Arakawa and a dog were found dead.
“Foul play is not suspected as a factor in those deaths at this time however exact cause of death has not been determined,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
The sheriff’s office said it launched an “active and ongoing investigation” into the deaths.
The sheriff’s office told NBC affiliate KOB of Albuquerque, New Mexico, a neighbor called police to conduct a welfare check, and Hackman, 95, and Arawaka, 64, were found around 1:45 p.m.
The couple met when Arakawa, a classical pianist, was working part-time at a fitness center in California, The New York Times reported in 1989. The pair married in 1991.
Arakawa shared a house with Hackman on 12 acres of land in the Santa Fe area, Architectural Digest reported in 1990.
Hackman told Architectural Digest he was attracted to the city after he had worked on a few movies there.
โIt had a kind of magic in it,โ he said.
The two-time Academy Award winner was on location filming while the house was being built, Architectural Digest reported, but Arakawa was on site for many of the renovations, and would call Hackman and send him photos of the work as it progressed.
Arakawa and Hackman lived a private life in New Mexico, but were spotted at public events like award ceremonies and movie premieres in the 1990s and early 2000s.
Hackman had three children, a son and two daughters, with his first wife, Faye Maltese. The pair divorced in 1986 after 30 years of marriage.
