Danielle Brooks revealed that the jumpsuit she sports in the upcoming “A Minecraft Movie” has a hidden meaning.
The Oscar-nominated actor recently spoke with TODAY.com about starring in the adventure comedy, which hits theaters April 4, and shared some secret behind-the-scenes details from filming.
While the family-friendly film is more light-hearted compared to her dramatic roles in movies like “The Color Purple” and shows like “Orange Is the New Black,” Brooks still managed to pay homage to the beloved characters from those past projects.
In “A Minecraft Movie” Brooks portrays Dawn, one of four misfits who are pulled through a portal and land in the Overworld. Her character dons a bright orange and purple in the film, a nod to “The Color Purple” and “OITNB.”
“What was cool is our costume designer, Amanda (Neale), she, I think, was very intentional about having orange and purple in my outfit,” Brooks told TODAY.com. “So I thought that was pretty cool.”
She said she instantly understood why Neale chose the two colors for Dawn. “I was like, ‘You realize this is, like, the height of my career? These two colors, orange and purple? She was like, ‘Yes, I know.’ I loved it.”
Brooks shared that co-star Jason Momoa was also a big fan of the colorful costume.
“Jason loved it even more,” she added. “He had (Neale) make him one of my jumpsuits.”
She said Momoa had planned to wear the orange and purple jumpsuit at one of the film’s premieres, but it didn’t arrive in time.
Brooks also had a suggestion for their characters’ styling in a possible sequel. “If we get a sequel, I think we should really think of some fun, funky hair,” she said, noting Momoa’s luscious locks in the fantasy flick and the recent mullet he showed off during an appearance on TODAY.
In addition to Brooks and Momoa, “A Minecraft Movie” also stars Jack Black, Jennifer Coolidge and Emma Myers. Brooks said she that is looking forward to fans seeing the movie, which is based on the “Minecraft” video game.
“I’m just really excited for people to watch it, and I hope that it reminds you to dance a little bit longer,” she shared. “And, maybe, you know, pop the champagne after you’ve shaken it up a little bit. I just want people to live as free as they possibly can.”
One important person she can’t wait to see the movie is her 5-year-old daughter, Freeya, whom she shares with husband Dennis Gelin.
Brooks said, “I’m going to take her as soon as I get home. I’m doing a private screening in Georgia and so I get to take her, and I cannot wait to pick our seat out, me, her and her dad. We are going to go watch the movie with a room full of family and friends.”
