Charlize Theron doesn’t regret being a single parent.
“The Old Guard 2” actor is a proud mom to her two kids, Jackson and August, whom she adopted in 2012 and 2015, respectively.
While appearing on the July 2 episode of the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, Theron talked about why she chose to be a single mom that included how she was influenced by her parents’ failed relationship, among other factors.
“It’s a combination of, like, I don’t want what they had, and then also being very honest with myself and understanding that I did not have the capability of being healthy in a relationship,” she said. “And those two things I had to acknowledge when I decided to be a parent, and I think it’s probably one of the healthiest decisions I ever made.”
Theron said she tends to get criticized by others for her decision, with some thinking that “something must be wrong with her.” However, she said she’s happy and is “living her truth” because she gets to “experience motherhood exactly how I wanted to experience it.”
As for how it affects her children, she said she’s unable to say.
“I can only tell you that this is the best way that I know how to be a mother to them. And maybe they’ll grow up and tell their story, and I will respect that. I just know that this was the only way that I knew I could do it,” she said.
“And my f—— God, do I love every single day of it,” she continued. “I love that I don’t have to share them with somebody.”
The “Mad Max: Fury Road” star also said that she knew she was “not somebody who should be having kids with another person” when she chose to be a parent.
As host Alex Cooper praised her being “mature” and “self-aware,” Theron said she had no choice but to be “honest” with herself because she was going to be responsible for a child’s life.
Theron explained that she’s “tried dating” and it’s hard to visualize a man moving into her home with her daughters still being there. While she’s thought about what life might be like as an empty nester, she said that she doesn’t miss being in love.
“There’s this notion that somebody like me must be missing out on something, and that people feel sorry for you, somehow, that you’re missing out on live,” Theron explained.
“It’s the thing that you don’t quite realize until you have kids — And I’m not saying that it replaces one love with the other, but it is such a tremendous love that I do not miss love,” she continued.
