Protests against Indian PM Modi in Calgary
Protests are continuing in the Calgary region today, including demonstrations in support of Khalistan, a proposed independent Sikh homeland in northern India.
A police officer on the scene estimated around 70 demonstrators took to Calgary’s Municipal Complex Plaza. The vast majority were protesting against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whom Prime Minister Mark Carney invited to the G7. There were more than 20 police officers at the plaza.
Officials have set up “designated demonstration zones” in Calgary and Banff for protesters amid this year’s summit, one of which is located at the plaza in front of city hall.
And while hundreds came out on Sunday to voice their opinions at city hall, so far, the other zones haven’t seen much activity.
In Banff, a group of around 40 protestors is tucked away in a parking lot, out of view from tourists streaming into the popular tourism destination.
Modi is scheduled to land in Calgary this evening.
