Carney announces $2B fund to protect tariff-threatened jobs
Carney begins by saying that U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade war has put the kinship that exists between the U.S. and Canada “under more strain” than ever before in our history.
He says that a new Liberal government will create the “Strategic Response Fund,” a $2-billion fund that will, in his words, protect the jobs of workers affected by Trump’s tariffs and “fortify the entire Canadian auto supply chain.”
Carney says the trade war threatens to hurt hard-working Canadians, including union workers. The workers behind him are represented by Unifor, he says.
In addition to Windsor, he points to Oshawa, Oakville and Hamilton, in Ontario, and Saguenay, Que., as industry towns that will be hurt by tariffs.
“That’s why our new government has committed to using all new revenues from retaliatory tariffs … to support Canadian workers,” he says.
