He may not have been as cool as Johnny Bravo, but โBrady Bunchโ star Barry Williams still managed to woo co-star Maureen McCormick.
Williams said he had an โon-again, off-againโ relationship with co-star McCormick during a rerun of an episode of his โA Very Brady Re-Runโ podcast that aired this week.
Williams, who played Greg on the classic sitcom, was discussing the popular Season 4 episode โThe Subject Was Noses,โ in which McCormickโs Marcia has her nose broken, causing a jock at her school named Doug to cancel their date after she had previously backed out of a date with her mild-mannered classmate, Charlie, to go out with him.
โIt did look like she was dating somebody very close to her on the set, judging from the relationship that I was witnessing between the two of you during this show,โ said Williamsโ co-host, Christopher Knight, who played his brother Peter on the show.
โYou two were looking a little bit close, a little bit less like brother and sister and more like โ you were looking at her, at times, the way the directions in the script probably told Charlie to look at Marsha,โ he continued.
โYou mean dreamy-eyed?โ Williams replied.
โThe longing kind of wide-eyed. Yeah. That was you. And she was looking dreamy,โ Knight said. โYeah. You guys you were going through a good week, I would say.โ
Williams said there was always chemistry with McCormick.
โIt was sort of like on-again, off-again with Maureen and I throughout the years. There was always a little dance being played that was broken up by hiatus,โ he said.
He also said that he tried not to let his emotions get in the way of the job he and McCormick had to do on the show.
โWhen she was pretending to have be affectionate with other guys and going out on dates and stuff, I liked to just stay out of the way and let her do her job and focus on and concentrate until an episode that called for us to be sitting next to one another,โ Williams said.
Knight also wondered if Williams made a point to be on the set when McCormick had a scene with someone like Nicholas Hammond, who played Doug in the episode.
โAt all times. Always โฆ Just to basically have a presence,โ he said.
McCormick has echoed Williamsโ comments about their relationship in the past.
โBarry and I were extremely attracted to each other,โ she told TODAY in 2008. โIt was even hard to be in a scene together. I was just dreaming of this romance. I had such an amazing attraction for him. It was awkward to be in scenes playing brother and sister. People started seeing it. Fortunately, it was on-again, off-again. We look at it now and we laugh.โ
Williams and McCormick have spoken many times over the years about their relationship. In his book โGrowing Up Brady,โ Williams wrote about how they first kissed while shooting the Season 4 episodes when the Bradys were in Hawaii.
When McCormick was asked about the kiss during an appearance on โWatch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen” in 2019, she said, โIt was good.”
Williams also confirmed he and McCormick dated during a 2013 interview with OWN, noting he initiated the kiss in Hawaii.
โThat was in Hawaii while we were filming those episodes,โ Williams said. โWe snuck away, it was a full moon, (we) walked along the sand. Well, I knew where that was headed. Of course, I set it up.โ
