Mindy Kaling is sharing her love of classic Hollywood movies with her kids.
On July 13, the โRunning Pointโ co-creator, 46, posted an Instagram carousel filled with pictures from a recent outing to her favorite Ethiopian restaurant with her longtime friend and former “The Office” co-star B.J. Novak.
Following the pair’s meal, they watched “The Princess Bride,” which Kaling called a “perfect movie,” with Kaling’s older daughter, 7 -year-old Katherine, whose nickname is “Kit”, and her son, 4-year-old Spencer.
Kaling included the images of her children’s feet as they sat in front of a TV screen watching the 1987 comedy.
“After dinner, we showed The Princess Bride to Kit and Spencer for the first time … and it was even better than when I saw it in 1987,” Kaling wrote.
“I hate when people say the phrase ‘itโs a perfect movieโ but here I am saying itโs a perfect movie. Kit was obsessed with Inigo Montoyaโs vengeance plot (shocking) and Spencer loved the Fire Swamp and the R.O.U.S.s,” she added.
Kaling also joked about how her crush in the movie has changed over the years.
โAs a kid I was obsessed with @caryelwes and now Iโm kind of a @mandypatinkin gal! Aging!โ she wrote, adding, โHave a great Sunday everyone.โ
Kaling is also a mom to a 1-year-old daughter, Anne, whom she welcomed in February 2024. The actor, writer and producer has never identified the father of her kids.
Kaling had her love of Hollywood movies in mind when she named her two oldest children.
The โMindy Projectโ alum told People in 2020 that Katherine and Spencer’s names pay homage to screen legends Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy.
She noted that she opted for “classic” names since she had no idea what her kids’ personalities would be like.
โI donโt trust my own judgment with those kinds of names,โ she said. โIf I name my son River, that connotes a certain kind of person who is very go with the flow, artsy. But what if heโs not like that at all? Will he be furious with me?โ
She added, โI just tried to pick classic names that felt like they would have to work really hard to get mad at me about later.โ
Kaling and Novak met on the set of “The Office” in 2004. They briefly dated while on the show, before splitting in 2007.
As for rumors that Novak is the father of her children, Kaling told Marie Claire in 2022 that the chatter doesn’t bother her.
โHeโs the godparent to both my kids โ and they have such a great relationship โ and so far (the rumors havenโt) affected my happiness at all, it hasnโt affected my kids or B.J.,” she said.
โIf thatโs what is going to be titillating to people, Iโll take it,โ she added.
