Leaders campaign against backdrop of global market turmoil

Carney takes a dig at Alberta Premier Danielle Smith

Hi, I’m Cat Tunney and I’m following the Liberal campaign this week. Carney clearly has Alberta Premier Danielle Smith on the brain as he takes his campaign west.

During a speech to supporters in Victoria on Sunday night, he reiterated his vow to fight Trump’s trade war.

ā€œWe are fighting them everywhere they understand,” he said, noting retaliatory tariffs will hurt Americans’ pocketbooks.

ā€œWe are fighting them on Fox News, which is what they understand. We’re sending Doug Ford onto Fox News to show them we’re not messing around up here,ā€ he said to laughter from the Liberal crowd.

ā€œAnd we’re going to send Danielle next. Well, maybe we won’t send Danielle. No, maybe we won’t send Danielle.ā€

Then later, while he was talking about energy, his microphone briefly cut out.

ā€œDon’t take it away,ā€ he joked. ā€œThat was Danielle. She was coming in.ā€

It’s not the first time he has taken aim at the Alberta premier on the hustings. Smith is no fan of the federal Liberals and told right-wing media outlet Breitbart last month that Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is the best leader for Canada because he’s more “in sync” with the direction of Trump.
