Why calls are mounting for Liberals to drop Chiang
Hello! Itโs Jenna, your morning live page writer.
Hereโs what happened. Paul Chiang, the Liberal candidate in the GTA riding of Markham-Unionville, suggested during a local Chinese-language news conference in January that someone should claim a bounty on Joe Tay, who is the Conservative candidate in Don Valley North.
Hong Kong police put out a bounty and arrest warrant for Tay and other democracy advocates in December. The bounty is $1-million HK, roughly $184,000 Cdn.
“To everyone here, you can claim the one-million-dollar bounty if you bring him to Toronto’s Chinese consulate,” Chiang said in reference to Tay, according to the Toronto Association for Democracy in China.
Chiang has since apologized. However, Tay released his own statement saying that an apology is not sufficient.
Now, the Liberals are facing pressure to drop Chiang, including from 13 different Hong Kong-Canadian organizations. We expect Liberal Leader Mark Carney will be asked about the future of Chiangโs candidacy at some point today.
