Prime Minister Mark Carney and U.S. President Donald Trump’s first phone call will take place this morning, a source with knowledge of the matter told Radio-Canada.
It will be the first conversation between the two men as leaders. Itย comes after Trump said he would proceed withย vehicle tariffs that threaten to cripple Canada’s auto sector.
On Thursday, Carney told reporters in Ottawa that Trump’s office had reached out to arrange a call and that it would take place “in the coming days.”
Carney’s public itinerary is empty this morning, which is unusual for an election campaign.
Trumpย signed an executive order on Wednesday to bring in aย new 25 per cent tariff on finished vehicles imported into the United States next week.
Carney vowed Canada will retaliateย ifย Trump moves ahead with theย tariffs next week.
Carney has previouslyย said he is open to a conversation if the president,ย who has repeatedly saidย that Canada should become the 51st state,ย respects Canada’s sovereignty.
More to come.
