The retailer is eliminating several jobs and closing its Charlotte office as it relocates employees to its main hub in Arkansas.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. โ Walmart is eliminating jobs and closing its Charlotte office while relocating corporate employees to its hubs in Arkansas and California, according to an internal memo obtained by WCNC Charlotte.ย
The news comes less than a year after Walmart filed plans to lay off over 150 Charlotte-based employees. Those jobs were based out of a corporate office in southwest Charlotte, and the layoffs followed a plan to relocate hundreds of corporate employees nationwide.ย
“We are making these changes to put key capabilities together, encouraging speed and shared understanding,” the memo reads. “Through this review process, we have eliminated some roles as we streamline how we work and will also be exiting our office in Charlotte, N.C.”ย
Walmart is also asking employees in Hoboken, New Jersey, and other smaller offices to relocate to Arkansas and California. The company says it’s already seen the benefits of previous relocation operations that have more employees working together in person. Walmart said it has contacted all of the employees who are directly affected by the layoffs.ย
Walmart is one of several major corporations that mandated employees return to the office as we get further from the COVID-19 pandemic. Bloomberg reported that hundreds of jobs are expected to be eliminated as part of this process. Corporate employees who were working remotely in Dallas, Atlanta and Toronto were asked to relocate to the Arkansas headquarters last year, according to CNBC. The nearly 350-acre campus has a dozen office buildings, a hotel and other amenities.ย
