When Zac Efron showed up to “Dancing With the Stars” to support his brother Dylan Efron, the cameras caught him saying something to his mother, Starla Baskett, setting off plenty of lip-reading attempts.
Now, after much speculation over what the actor may have said, Dylan Efron is shedding some light on the viral moment.
While appearing on an episode of Sirius XM show “The Smith Sisters Live” on Dec. 9, Dylan Efron addressed the question on everyone’s mind: What did Zac Efron actually say?
The moment occurred in the Nov. 18 semifinals episode of “Dancing With the Stars” after Dylan Efron and his professional dancing partner, Danielle Karagach, received their scores. Each of the judges gave the duo a 9, which added up to a 27 out of 30 possible points.
The hosts of “The Smith Sisters Live” said they were curious to know if Zac Efron had said, “Is that a good score?” which some viewers took to mean that the actor wasn’t familiar with “Dancing with the Stars,” even though his brother had lasted all the way to the finale.
Dylan Efron, who ended up in fourth place on this season of “Dancing With the Stars,” said he did ask his brother about the viral moment.
“I actually did speak to Zac about this because I was just saying it as I thought it was funny. But then Zac was like, ‘Oh, no.’ He’s like, ‘They’re misinterpreting it,'” Dylan Efron said.
“And I can’t remember what he was saying, but I think he said that he thought it was a really good dance. So he’s like, ‘Is that the highest score they would give?'” he added.
So in the end, Zac Efron was simply looking out for his little brother’s best interest.
“I think he was more (so saying) that should have been higher or something like that,” Dylan Efron noted.
As a result, seeing the moment go viral left Zac Efron “defensive,” his brother said.
“It was funny regardless, but Zac got defensive. He’s like, ‘No, they misinterpreted what I meant,'” he said.
Although he only attended one screening of the show, Zac Efron’s presence was also felt during another episode. During Week 5’s “Dedication Night,” Dylan Efron and his partner danced with his 5-year-old sister, Olivia, to “Rewrite the Stars” from Zac Efron’s film “The Greatest Showman.”
