CHARLOTTE, N.C. — As scorching temperatures grip the Carolinas, Duke Energy is urging customers to reduce electricity use Monday between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., to help ease strain on the power grid and prevent potential isolated outages.
The utility company is asking residents across both North and South Carolina to take simple steps to conserve energy during this peak demand window. These include raising thermostats to the highest comfortable setting, postponing laundry and dishwashing, avoiding prolonged use of ovens and stoves, and turning off unnecessary lights and appliances.
“We deeply appreciate our customers’ cooperation, patience and understanding as we work to help ensure the stability and reliability of the system,” Duke Energy’s vice president of grid operations – planning and operations Ben Harrison said. “We understand that reducing electricity use during these hours can be inconvenient, but our customers’ actions make a significant difference for all.”

Duke Energy emphasized that even small changes in energy use can help maintain normal operations and protect the grid during extreme weather conditions. The company also suggested outdoor grilling as an alternative to indoor cooking to keep homes cooler and reduce air conditioning load.
With Charlotte and surrounding areas experiencing elevated temperatures, Duke Energy’s call to action is a proactive measure to manage available power supplies and avoid disruptions. Customers are encouraged to stay informed and follow updates from the utility as weather conditions evolve.
