Surge pricing is coming to zoos, theme parks and family attractions

More destinations are using dynamic pricing, meaning prices change based on demand, weather and booking timing.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. โ€” You’ve probably heard of surge pricing for flights and rideshares, but now it’s creeping into places like zoos and museums.ย

Are you planning a trip to the zoo or aquarium this summer? Be prepared for surge pricing, even at family attractions.ย

More destinations are using dynamic pricing similar to airlines and ride-share apps. That means prices can change based on demand, weather, or booking timing.

Some days, youโ€™ll pay less if you book early. Other times, prices jump if demand is high or walk-in traffic is heavy.

A recent study found that 17% of attractions now use variable pricing. According to researchers, at least 6% have adopted full dynamic pricing models.ย

Operators say it helps them manage budgets, crowds, and staffing. However, for families, it can make budgeting harder, especially with last-minute visits.ย

If you’re looking to avoid last-minute fees, experts say to book ahead, visit during off-peak times and look for discount programs. Libraries, military programs and bundled ticket apps can also help save money.ย

The bottom line? Admission prices are changing fast, and a little planning could go a long way.ย
