Two days after putting Paris at his feet and his team on his shoulders, Victor Wembanyama fell back to earth. On Saturday, January 25, the French phenomenon’s San Antonio Spurs were slapped in the face on the floor of the Accor Arena by the vengeful Indiana Pacers (98-136).
Like their star player, who seemed tired, annoyed and often without solutions – but still scored 20 points and 12 rebounds – the Spurs could not compete throughout the game against the aggressive team led by Tyrese Haliburton. The heavy defeat, two days after a “perfect evening,” does not tarnish the six days spent in the capital.
“This week was amazing,” said the French player, touched, after the game, making sure to thank the organizers, fans and media who “[made] him happy.” After arriving in Paris on Monday, Wembanyama had a packed week filled with numerous appearances around town, yet he still found the time to see his family. Being a star, “it’s a lot of responsibility that comes with that,” said Spurs veteran Chris Paul, who knows a thing or two about it from his 20-year career. “And then Vic[tor] is one of those guys, too, who tries to sign every autograph…”
